hello all
firstly apologies for posting that long article... I didn't realise it would look quite that long on the page.
Anyway thought it was time I posted something again. Have been in the new job for three weeks exactly now. Got my first pay slip this week. I haven't opened it, I'm slightly scared to as I know it won't be as much as I had in the previous job. (I don't know why I don't want to confirm what I know by opening the pay slip but I don't...) I am still on a casual contract and I think I will be for a while but I am making a nest for myself there. I've always loved radio and when i was a kid I wanted to be a DJ, (the Matthew Rudd of Upper Hutt?) ;-) but I loved print too and I've sometimes wondered if I would ever have a go at radio. I love writing and I wondered if radio would ever be the same. But of course you have to write for radio too, and I am just loving this. Whast I am doing is not the sort of thing that I will be excited about if I'm still doing it this time next year... but every day I do a little more and feel more at home and feel that even at the lower pay rate this job is RIGHT for me and I can be good at this.
I will describe a little of what I do. The programme, Morning Report runs from 6am to 9am throughout New Zealand. I arrive at 5am (ouch!) and start work on newspaper summaries. There are four of these, of two minutes length each, two of daily papers throughout New Zealand and two of overseas papers (Australia, Britain, the US and Asia). This takes longer than you might think as the papers aren't (except one) physically in front of you but it's an opportunity to practice writing and work out what phrases work and don't work on radio. Then I am involved in a minor capacity with the rest of the programme, writing intros, cutting audio clips, arranging papers, showing guests in and out. After 9am, we prepare for Midday Report and hour of news at 12, I am producer for this. This sounds a bit more glamorous than it actually is as the decisions on content are made by others. My job is to bring it to air... it is the sort of thing that will no doubt become very easy very quickly but at the moment it's a great opportunity to pick up all the technical side which is obviously going to be crucial. Finish at 1pm and off home I go.
I will stop there as this could be getting a bit dull, but I thought some of you might be interested in how I'm going. The only disadvantage really is the hours and I certainly won't be posting here or on tother board very much...

I found out yesterday, much to my amusement, that it's Sir Edward Elgar on the £20 note. (For those of you not in the know, Elgar is my comedy answer to any pub picture quiz questions I don't know the answer to, along with Stalin and Leon Trotsky.)

A quick note to say I'm off on another road trip. This time, it's western Colorado and Utah. Hopefully I will have some lovely pix of the Arches National Park and fall foliage to show off when I get back on Friday.
